Memorial Day is about honoring veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice. This also is a time to reflect on those homeless veterans that are here and need our help.  According to the Department of Veterans Affairs “The majority (homeless veterans) are single; live in urban areas; and suffer from mental illness, alcohol and/or substance abuse, or co-occurring disorders. About 11% of the adult homeless population are veterans”.

Last year in Illinois there was an overall 48% decline in unsheltered veterans versus in 2015, however that still left an estimated 236 veterans that did not find shelter according to U. S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) 2016 Annual Homeless Assessment Report.

So far this year PADS  has seen a 125% increase in the veteran guests to our shelter versus in 2016. Overall at PADS last year we served over 20,000 meals, provided emergency shelter for 342 guests and continued with a 74% placement success rate, which is three times the national average.

Your direct donation to PADS can support not only veterans but many others that need a safe place to lay their head at night, a nourishing meal and resources to assist them on a path toward a better life. Remember, homeless doesn’t have to mean hopeless. Click here to donate directly today.
